Noirmont

A huge rocky headland rises sharply and stretches out like a protective arm to the west of St. Aubins Bay. This area is 'Noirmont'.

This little martello tower (built around 1810) sits below the steep headland at the very edge of the land. Now painted its distinctive black and white, today it acts as a lighthouse.

This beautiful headland offers panoramic views from St. Aubins to St. Helier and beyond to Greve d'Azette, and then sweeping around way out to sea and across to Portelet bay in the west.

With its commanding views, it's hardly surprising that this headland was heavily fortified by the Germans during their occupation of the island. A large command bunker is secreted below ground.

An enormous gun tower, perched high above the sea, now makes a place to sit and enjoy some stunning scenery, watch the ships as they make their way in and out of the island, or perhaps even spot some dolphins playing in the water.

Noirmont has been preserved by the States of Jersey as a war memorial.

The headland acts as a sanctuary to both plants and wildlife, and the grass covered cliffs are ablaze with wild heather during the summer.

I love it up here - stunning views, clear sea air, open spaces left in their natural state, and a chance to gaze out to the blue horizon watching the many boats plying their way across the water.
