Plemont On the north of the island rugged granite cliffs rise to a height of just over 400 feet. There are beaches on this stretch of coastline, but they are smaller than elsewhere and sometimes a little more difficult to reach. Plemont is a good example of this, and I have included it because of its dramatic setting. |

Plemont is accessed by a narrow, winding road and parking at the top of the bay is limited. The steps leading down onto the beach can be a bit of a struggle if you are unfit. If you do negotiate them, however, you'll be rewarded by a beautiful white sandy beach surrounded by caves and enormous boulders eroded by the sea. |

You will find the usual cafe and toilets at the top of the steep steps, and the bay is certainly popular as a place to spend a day by the water. For me, however, the appeal lies very much in the scenery. Lifeguards are on duty and a bell warns of the incoming tide. This is definitely not a place to be left stranded. A walk up into some of the gullies and caves serves as a reminder of the huge power of the ocean. |
