Gorey and the Royal Bay of Grouville (Longbeach)

Gorey Castle, also known as Mont Orgueil Castle - one of the most photographed sights in the island. Mont Orgueil (pronounced Mont Orgay) means Mount Pride and construction on this beautiful castle started somewhere between 1180 and 1212.

The island is full of fortifications built through the ages to stave off invasion from neighbouring France. From its position above Gorey Harbour this castle has a clear view of the Normandy coastline.

There are many public gardens in the island, some very tiny. This little promenade garden hugs the edge of the sea wall at Gorey. If you look in the photo (top right) you can see that someone in our Parks Department has a bit of a sense of humour because the little man in the boat is made out of plants.

Long Beach - looking north towards Gorey Castle and south towards La Rocque. This enormous sandy bay stretches almost half the depth of the island and is popular with locals for sunbathing, swimming and windsurfing.

Things to see and do in this area: castle, harbour, beach, gardens, Gorey Village, Jersey Potteries (in the village), plus loads of places to eat - from beach cafe to barbecue and right up the scale to haute cuisine in some of the finest restaurants in the island.
