Samares Manor |
|
|
Situated in the south
east of the island in St Clement, is one of our loveliest manor houses. Samares Manor originally
dates back to Norman times and is the traditional home of the Seigneur of the
Parish. This property has been
owned by the same family since 1924, when it was bought by Sir James Knott.
|
|
Sir James spent a
considerable amount of money on both the manor house and the surrounding
grounds - which were, in the 1920s, just salt marsh. What exists today is a
beautiful house nestling in 14 acres of imaginatively landscaped
gardens. Different areas of the
grounds have distinct themes. Wheelchair friendly pathways meander past small
lakes filled with ducks, geese and swans and areas of lush planting give way
to tranquil woodland. On the right here is the Japanese garden. |
|
|
|
The beautiful, walled
herb garden contains a wide selection of plants known for their use in
cosmetics preparations, medicines and for cooking. The Herb Garden Restaurant is situated to one side of the manor house and right beside the warm and sunny garden. It makes for a lovely setting and not surprisingly some of these home grown herbs are used to prepare dishes on the restaurant menu. |
|
|
To the side of the manor house, traditional farm buildings stand fringing a central courtyard. These buildings now house a craft centre and an agricultural and carriage museum exhibiting farming equipment and horse carriages from a bygone era. |

Samares Manor is open to
visitors every day from about the end of March until mid October. Other
specific events are scheduled in the summer months - for instance a Rose and
Flower show and a Summer fete, and every year the 'Samares Players' perform a
Shakespeare play on the lawns in front of the house. For more detailed information on what is available to see and do, scheduled events, opening hours and entry prices, please visit their website here. |

Self catering accommodation is also available to rent within the Manor's grounds and again, for details, please click the link above. |
